Guantánamo – Dr. Angel Piriz Momblant, a prominent Guantanamo surgeon, was awarded the title of Hero of Labor of the Republic of Cuba on April 29th in a ceremony held in Havana and led by Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Party and President of the Republic of Cuba.

Piriz received the high recognition during the awards ceremony of the Cuban Workers’ Federation (CTC), in honor of the celebrations of International Workers’ Day on May Day. A ceremony also honored a group of union leaders, outstanding staffs, and vanguard workers.

He is a renowned professor, assistant researcher, and consultant at the Guantánamo University of Medical Sciences. He is also a specialist in liver, biliary tract, and pancreas, holds the title of Second Degree Specialist in General Surgery, and holds a Master’s Degree in Emergency Medicine. He founded medical education at Guantánamo. In 2012, 2014, and 2018, he received the Annual Health Award.

His extensive professional career includes graduating as a surgeon from the Higher Institute of Medical Sciences in the province of Santiago de Cuba in 1975. However, it wasn’t until 1978 that he introduced the first surgical techniques for treating the pancreas in Guantánamo, and he has already performed more than 100 surgeries.

This places Guantánamo, and especially the Doctor Agostinho Neto General Teaching Hospital, among the Cuban centers with the most experience in these surgeries. These surgeries are traditionally performed in large, internationally renowned hospitals such as the Hermanos Ameijeiras Hospital in Havana and the Calixto García Hospital in Holguín, due to their complex surgical procedure.
