Guantánamo.- More than 108,000 residents of the province of Guantánamo are experiencing difficulties receiving drinking water due to the intense and prolonged drought affecting 64 water sources in all municipalities.

In this regard, the reservoir volume continues to decrease, reaching 22.6 percent of its capacity. It is necessary restrictions on different uses and the adoption of measures to guarantee the water supply to the population.

The La Yaya reservoir is in critical condition, storing 11 million cubic meters of water out of a possible 160 million cubic meters, barely 7 percent of its capacity.

The situation is impeding services to the agricultural system in the municipalities of Niceto Pérez and Guantánamo, and it also affects efficient supply of water to approximately 60,000 residents in the southern part of the provincial capital.

Directors, specialists, and workers from the National Institute of Hydraulic Resources in the province are seeking alternative sources for water supply, building new aqueducts, and rigorously organizing the service using tanker trucks, which is further hampered by the fuel shortage and the lack of spare parts.
