Reducing the pollution load in the Guaso River, and consequently, in the Guantánamo Bay, is the objective of environmental specialists and stakeholders from various sectors participating in the Integrated Management of the Middle and Lower Sections of the Guantánamo-Guaso Watershed project. This work involves controlling the sources affecting this area of national interest.

Alexander Fernández Velázquez, one of the project coordinators, acknowledges that one of the successes of this initiative is the collection and treatment of waste, in conjunction with the Raw Materials Recovery Company of the municipality of Guantánamo, which is used in new production cycles as part of the circular economy strategy.

Another action is the application of efficient microorganisms developed by the Mountain Development Center, which administers them to the Guantánamo Dairy Products Company’s liquid waste treatment system. This task also involves taking samples before and after the procedure to evaluate the results.

Likewise, water characterization is being carried out in Guantánamo Bay, along with a soil study in the towns of Glorieta, Boquerón, and Caimanera to determine the progress of erosion and salinization processes in those areas, says Agnielis García González, the other project coordinator.

As part of the Integrated Management of the Middle and Lower Parts of the Guantánamo Guaso Watershed to reduce pollution in the bay, the reforestation of the Caimanera mangrove and a section of the Guaso River is also planned by the provincial capital municipality’s Forestry Company.
