Guantanamo – In view of the increase of patients with non-specific febrile syndrome due to the presence of Oropouche fever in two health areas of the municipalities of Santiago de Cuba and Songo-La Maya, bordering several Guantanamo territories, the health authorities of Cuba’s Upper East are strengthening epidemiological surveillance and providing guidance to families about this virus symptoms.
Doctor Yaniuska Amaro Gonzalez, from the Omar Ranedo Pubillones Polyclinic, located in Guantanamo downtown, pointed out that the clinical picture of the disease is mild, preceded by an incubation period of five to seven days, which is characterized by fever, headaches, muscular and joint pains.
Through the monitoring and surveillance actions of non-specific febrile syndromes in the Santiago de Cuba Province, the presence of the Oropouche virus was identified in two Health areas of the municipalities Santiago de Cuba (Ernesto Guevara) and Songo La Maya (Carlos J. Finlay), based on samples studied at the national reference laboratory of the Pedro Kourí Institute (IPK).
All cases have evolved favorably with improvement in symptoms between the third and fourth day after the diagnose of the disease.
Entomo-epidemiological actions are developed to cut the chain of transmission and achieve control of the disease in the shortest time possible.
