With the ratification of the Proclamation of Latin America as a Zone of Peace, the support for the global anti-war campaign and the call to the world progressive movement to fight against imperialism, the 8th International Seminar for Peace and the Abolition of Foreign Military Bases concluded in Guantánamo, which took place from May 4 to 5 in the Mariana Grajales Coello Revolution Square.

The Final Declaration of the event was made public this Sunday in a popular ceremony held in the central park of the coastal town of Caimanera, bordering the illegal North American naval base in Guantanamo Bay.

The meeting was attended by Yoel Pérez García, top political leader in the Cuban Upper East, and Carlos Martínez Turro, deputy governor at the same level, along with Fernando González Llort, Hero of the Republic and president of the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (Icap) and Iraklis Tsavdaridis, executive secretary of the World Peace Council.

There, the voice of Lauren Cuza Ruano, a fifth grade student at the Luis Ramírez López primary school, was raised, who on behalf of the Caimanera pioneers regretted the existence there of a US military facility that limits local development, affects fishing and production of salt, while hindering port operations and commercial exchange with the world.

Sara Palmezano, representative of the Committee of Friends of Cuba in Cali, Colombia, made the final speech of the International Seminar, in which 80 delegates from 30 countries subscribe that the naval base in Guantanamo constitutes a threat to independence and sovereignty in Latin America. and the Caribbean.

The participants in the event demanded the return of that territory to Cuba, since it violates international treaties as there exists a torture center and a prison that disrespects the human rights of people sentenced to imprisonment without due process of law. They also committed to working to build continental peace, which implies that the Governments of Colombia, Brazil and Argentina urgently abandon the status of global partners and non-NATO allies.
