Guantánamo.- With the presence of Yoel Pérez García, a member of the Central Committee and First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) in the province, along with Lázaro Castellanos Matos, the First Secretary of the Party in the municipality of Imías, a meeting was held with representatives of the territory’s productive sectors to assess key issues on food production in the region.
During the meeting, also attended by officials and directors of the National Association of Small Farmers (ANAP) in the province, participants discussed the main challenges that the municipality’s cooperatives are facing, including the loss of more than two kilometers of pipelines due to river flooding, caused by Hurricane Oscar, which has negatively affected irrigation systems.
Likewise, long term effects of drought are also affecting the area, which limits the water availability to crops.
The Party’s leader also highlighted the urgent need to increase food production, while addressing the phenomenon of the deviation of products to other territories, which limits local availability.
In contrast, he recognized in communities such as Yacabo Abajo, where sales by intermediaries and informal roadside sales have been reduced, favoring greater control over agricultural products.
