Guantánamo – The President of the Provincial Defense Council, Yoel Pérez García, is overseeing the distribution of subsidized food baskets by helicopter to communities previously isolated by land in the municipalities of El Salvador and Niceto Pérez, following the impact of Hurricane Melissa in eastern Cuba.

The mountain communities of San Fernando, in El Salvador, as well as Casimba de Filipinas and Maca Arriba, in Niceto Pérez, are receiving shipments of rice, flour for bread, beans, and World Food Programme (WFP) food kits containing oil, sugar, rice, and beans.

Residents who were visited before Hurricane Melissa to assess their preparedness for the impending storm are now benefiting.

The highest authority of the Provincial Defense Council also toured the district of Reparto Obrero, one of the hardest hit by Hurricane Melissa. There, in response to residents’ demands, he is checking on the cleanup and the restoration of the electrical system, among other services.
