Guantánamo – From Guantánamo, Cuba’s first anti-imperialist stronghold, labor unions, students, and the general public denounce the breakdown of peace in “Our America” following the U.S. military aggression against Venezuela that began on January 3.

In Plaza 24 de Febrero, the site of important historical events in the territory, tribute is paid to the 32 compatriots who died in the line of duty in the sister nation to the south, and the flagrant violation of international law is denounced. This violation has resulted in the illegitimate kidnapping of President Nicolás Maduro and Cilia Flores, as well as threatening the sovereignty and resources of the Venezuelan people.

Migdalia Tamayo, vice president of the UNEAC (National Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba) in the province, reaffirms solidarity with Venezuela and condemns the treacherous aggression perpetrated by the US against the sister South American nation on January 3rd.

Faced with this affront to regional dignity, the people of Guantánamo, along with their main government and party leaders, issue a firm call demanding the immediate and unconditional release of the constitutional president and his wife.

Likewise, the event convened by the Municipal Assembly of People’s Power and the Provincial Union of Cuban Workers demands the cessation of all foreign intervention and absolute respect for the nation’s self-determination. Guantanamo, defending Venezuela today, is safeguarding the right of all peoples to a future without war.

During the ceremony, the labor and student movement, intellectuals, and the people of Guantánamo call upon the international community and people of conscience in the United States to join this demand for justice and freedom. The stability of our continent, declared a zone of peace, cannot be sacrificed to imperial interests.
