
The Governor of Guantanamo, Alis Azahares Torreblanca, received the Hon. Mr. John Geoffrey Gartshore, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Canada in Cuba, who visited the territory for five days.
During the exchange Azahares Torreblanca provided extensive information about the main cultural, historical, geographical and socio-economic characteristics of the province, as well as the projects that are materializing in the territory as part of the development strategy until 2023.
The Canadian ambassador described his visit as very positive and highlighted the authentic heritage and cultural values appreciated during his tour of Guantanamo and the province’s possibilities to develop nature tourism of great interest to visitors to his country, the main source of tourists to the island.
During his stay in Guantanamo, the diplomat, accompanied by Mrs. Elizabeth Utting, Head of the Political Section of the embassy visited the communities of Planta Vieja and La Alegría, in the municipality of Yateras, where he shared with Francisco Ramírez, known as the Cacique Panchito, cultivator of Indo-Cuban traditions.
Geoff Gartshore also reached the town of Cajobabo and its April 11 museum in the municipality of Imías as well as cultural and historical sites of Baracoa.
