Andrés de la Cruz, player for the Indios del Guaso baseball team and known to everyone as El caciquito, is the only Guantanamo member of the Cuban team to participate in the Champions League in Mexico, to be held from September 28 to October first.
In statements to a Solvisión press team, de la Cruz said that he was happy and motivated by the news, which he considers a recognition of his efforts and performances in the last National Series, where he turned out to be the Most Complete Shortstop.
The World Baseball and Softball Confederation (WBSC) and the Mexican Baseball League (LMB) are the organizers of the champions international tournament, considered a historical milestone for that sport at a global level, in which the Baseball Leagues of different nations for the first time in history.
The champions of the Mexican Baseball League (LMB) – Leones de Yucatán – will host the inaugural issue at the Kukulcán Alamo Ball Park in the City of Mérida in Yucatán, Mexico, an event that also has the collaboration of the Government of the Yucatan State.
According to Horacio de la Vega, president of the LMB, the idea is to create a “Club World Cup” that brings together the champions of the most important leagues around the world.
The project will begin with the Americas chapter this year, and in 2024, the tournament will take place in its European version.
Between that year and 2025, Asia is expected to begin its competition.
