Due to the complex economic outlook of the country, Cuba needs to increase yields in economic activities such as the coffee harvest, an imperative that the people of Guantanamo respond, determined to collect 1,595.8 tons of grain, some 422 tons more than in the previous stage.
In this coffee harvest, it is planned to collect 1,555.6 tons of Arabica coffee grains, a figure that represents 66 percent of the foreseen plan, as it is a high-quality variety intended for export, in order to increase income for the economy, Céspedes Lobaina reported, who is the sub-delegate of Various Crops in the territory.
Given the limitations with tires for transportation, fuel, in addition to ropes, nails and other inputs, coffee growers use resources left over from previous harvests, in addition to recycled bags, baskets of yagua (plant fiber) and also they transfer the coffee on mule trains, horses and other means.
To guarantee the collection, the province has an internal force of 9,254 collectors, who will work alongside those mobilized in necessary cases such as the Maisí Municipality, where more personnel was required due to grain ripening season.
Céspedes Lobaina said that Guantanamo has 67 processing plant for wet coffee processing and 5 mills for dry processing, which received repairs for their proper functioning in the 2023-2024 harvest.
Guantanamo residents are looking for alternatives in order to increase the yields of the current coffee harvest, in favor of national consumption and achieve greater exports of this item for the benefit of the Cuban economy.
