The Guantanamo canoeist José Ramón Pelier added the gold medal to his personnal best in the men’s 1000-meter single canoe competition at the Santiago de Chile  Pan American Games 2023.

The young athlete, who is originally from Baracoa, on Saturday, November 4th, stopped the clocks at 3:48.69 minutes to beat the Brazilian Isaquías Queiroz, Tokyo Olympic champion and two-times Pan American champion, and gave his country its second gold medal in speed canoeing in this regional event.

With this golden medal, Cuba scores 24 medals in this event and came fith in the medal rankings at Santiago de Chile 2023.

The Brazilian Queiroz obtained the silver medal, clocking 3:54.05 and the bronze medal went to the Canadian Connor Fitzpatrick (3:55.13).
