Guantanamo.- Under the slogan “Prioritize breastfeeding: create sustainable support systems,” Guantánamo celebrates Breastfeeding Week until August 7th, dedicated to promoting the benefits of this practice for the development and growth of newborns and better maternal health outcomes.

Healthcare personnel conduct educational talks, workshops, and other activities to explain to pregnant women, new mothers, and their families the importance of using breast milk, which contains all the nutrients needed to feed babies, exclusively during the first months of life and as a supplement until the age of two.

In the province’s health centers, polyclinics, and hospitals, this healthy food is promoted, which immunizes, reduces the risk of sudden infant death síndrome, and the onset of chronic diseases, among other benefits.

Maternity home specialists also teach the proper technique for good breastfeeding practices, which enhances cognitive development and raises awareness about bonding more closely with their babies

Likewise, the healthcare personnel during the Breastfeeding Week’s activities explain that breastfeeding lowers mother’s risk of breast cancer, ovarian cancer, osteoporosis (weak bones), and other health benefits.
