Guantánamo – The Solemn Assembly of the Municipal People’s Power in Guantánamo will be held today, January 28, in Plaza 24 de Febrero, in honor of José Martí’s birthday and as a prelude to Fidel Castro’s centennial.

Idaliena Díaz Casamayor, president of the Municipal Assembly of People’s Power (AMPP), announced that the date was changed due to weather conditions and that important awards will be presented, including the La Fama statuette and the City Shield, as well as the Guantánamo Pride distinction, which is awarded every five years to those who, having previously received La Fama or the Shield, and maintain a sustained record of contributions to the municipality.

This year, the Solemn Assembly includes the new distinction of Illustrious Son of the City, and among the participants are guests Pachito Correa, an engineer who is currently part of the team of Vice Prime Minister Inés María Chapman; and Claudio Casal, author of the city’s song, who is participating in this event for the fifth consecutive year; the singer-song writer Annie Garcés and the Voz Tempo choir.

The solemn ceremony aims to convey a message of confidence in the municipality’s economic and social development.
