Guantánamo – The main event in Guantánamo for December 5th that marks the Cuban Construction Worker’s Day, took place with the presentation of awards to outstanding men, women, and work teams of the construction sector. The ceremony was also attended by Yoel Pérez García, First Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, and Governor Alis Azahares Torreblanca.
The event commemorated the date, when in 1972 the Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro, at the Third Congress of the Construction Sector, proposed it to honor Armando Mestre, a participant in the attack on the Moncada Barracks on July 26, 1953, and a martyr in the struggle.

The occasion also served as an opportunity to award the Armando Mestre Distinction, the sector’s highest recognition, to workers with 20 years of service (for women) and 25 years (for men) for outstanding and uninterrupted performance.
The celebration in Guantánamo Province, for the Cuban Construction Workers’ Day, also included the recognition of the “Desatadas” (Outstanding) status that was given to the Community Architect Company and the Braulio Curuneaux Contingent Basic Business Unit.
Similarly, several entities in the sector were recognized for their commendable performance during the past year, as well as those recognized for their work in the recovery efforts in the municipalities affected by the devastating passage of Hurricane Melissa.

Also highlighted for their lifetime achievements were Angel Luis López Millet, a woman with 35 years of service and a man with 50, who is the brigade director for housing construction at the Guantánamo Comprehensive Construction Company.
The provincial celebration in Guantánamo provided an opportunity to congratulate the couples of the Dignity in Construction program, who have been married for several years.
