Guantanamo.- More than 85 percent of the state facilities affected by Hurricane Oscar in Guantánamo have been recovered at the end of this week, according to information from the Provincial Temporary Group that monitors the progress of this process in the Cuban Upper East.
In the province, 700 institutions were damaged and 605 have been repaired, 95 remain pending, of which 21 have resources. It is worth highlighting the results in priority sectors such as Public Health, which already has all of its damaged centers in operation (71), while Education only needs five to be rehabilitated and Culture and Sports, one each.
The housing program is experiencing a slight improvement, as 280 houses that had been left without roof and 2,037 with partial loss of the same have been recovered; this represents 17 percent of the damages, which exceed 12,909 homes in the four municipalities of the East, of which 390 were completely collapsed, 722 partial, 1,239 to total roof collapses and 10,386 are reported with partial damage to the roof.
Precisely to advance in this section, the municipal governments are working on the conditioning of new settlements for housing in Jesús Lores, Imías; Buena Vista 1, in San Antonio del Sur; La Máquina, in Maisí and Mabujabo, in Baracoa. In addition, a change of use is proposed for 39 state centers in the four municipalities affected by Oscar, which will allow the creation of 212 homes in places such as the Assisted Center of Baracoa, for example.
In terms of roads, the priority continues to be the recovery of mountain roads and the paving or patching of streets such as the Yacabo Abajo Bridge and the entrance to San Antonio del Sur and Imías. The work on the Acopio factory and the Sabanalamar Bridge has been completed.
All affected electricity and communications services have been restored, as well as the water supply system, and monitoring by the responsible entities continues in the event of possible breakdowns or other mishaps such as the recent disconnection of the national electrical system that led to the activation of the island system with only 11 MW, serving the vital circuits.
The reception and transfer of donations to the municipalities continues. To date, 49 have been received, consisting of food, mattresses, women’s, men’s and children’s clothing; footwear and trousseaus.
