The tasks to be carried out on May 20 to 21 during the Meteoro popular exercise with the aim of reducing the risk of disasters, were specified at a meeting of the Provincial Defense Council (CDP) of Guantanamo, led by its president Rafael Pérez Fernández .
This exercise will have two stages dedicated to the preparation of the command and management bodies and the population in general, with the central motto: “Strengthening of the province’s preparation and response capacities to face the dangers of natural, technological disasters and sanitary”.
Those days will also serve as preparation for the next hurricane season in Cuba, from June 1 to November 30, as well as the confrontation and action in case of extreme hydrometeorological phenomena identified as: severe local storms, tornadoes, heavy rains, strong winds and flash floods or others such as the long period of drought, with a great impact on agriculture.
During Meteor 2023, the population will participate in practical activities to reduce risks in vulnerable communities, economic and social entities; and in sanitation and cleaning of neighborhoods .
Several exercises are planned in Guantanamo, including a large-scale firefighting drill as a result of an electrical discharge in the battery of fuel tanks at the Territorial Directorate of Fuel Marketing, CUPET.
During the meeting of the Provincial Defense Council, the complex hydrometeorological situation of the province was addressed due to the lack of rainfall for several months, a problem that keeps the reservoirs at just over 21 percent of their filling capacity, 95 communities where they extend the cycles of water distribution by tanker trucks and effects on some 98,700 Guantanamo residents and 4,800 agricultural hectares.
