Guantánamo.- Estimates show that the coffee harvest in the province of Guantanamo is a favorable season, with a production of 89.9 tons of coffee grains currently harvested, exceeding the estimated 82.4 tons, according to José Francisco Saiz Machado, head of the agricultural department at the Provincial Delegation of Agriculture.
The manager told Venceremos Newspaper that the rains in late September and early October, along with high temperatures, accelerated the ripening of the beans in almost all municipalities, prompting the mobilization of support from organizations and universities in the municipalities of Maisí and Yateras.
However, Maisí is the only territory that has low yields, with 27% of its plan pending and a deficit of 9,345 cans. This is due to a low workforce incorporation (32%) and inefficient ripening control (14%). Furthermore, due to heavy rains, Maisí is currently losing 12,000 cans, compared to 4,500 in Yateras and 3,000 in San Antonio del Sur.
Saiz Machado assured that there is enough coffee in all municipalities to meet the estimated plans, so no excuses for noncompliance will be accepted. To date, the pulping program is 67% complete, with a shortage of 16,000 cans.
