By closing 2023 with one thousand seven thousand 242 hectares (ha) of bananas planted, Guantanamo exceeds its plan in this important fruit crop, one of those prioritized by the country and the Cuban easternmost territory.
Albernis Veranes Favier, provincial delegate of Agriculture, considered that current agricultural production fails to meet domestic food needs of the territory, “but the figure mentioned exceeds by 453.46 hectares what was foreseen the previous year.”
The director specified that this result constitutes, however, a step forward, by achieving the number of caballería (land measurement of approximately of 1858 m²) per thousand inhabitants, a commitment made with Cuban Vice President Salvador Valdés Mesa.
Veranes Favier admitted that what was planned in another fundamental area, cassava, is far from the same previous behavior, since the deficit exceeds four thousand hectares, and is equivalent to only 43 percent of what was foreseen.
However, he added, “we are optimistic when it comes to taro and yams, two highly requested items, since we achieve at least two hectares for every thousand Guantanamo residents.”
He specified that the territory closed last year with 1,015.24 hectares of both tubers, 3.53 above the commitment, although only three municipalities achieved it: El Salvador, Maisí and Yateras.
