The Cuban Ranger Corps in Guantanamo began early preparations for the national forest fire protection campaign, which will begin in January and end in May 2024, when the rainy period begins.
Azarelis Suárez Iznaga, fire management specialist at the provincial headquarters of the entity, said that the actions are implemented to reduce accidents that endanger the extension of the forest area, biodiversity, as well as the population of the forest environment.
He said that actions such as increasing the presence of forest rangers in the communities identified with a high causality index for the occurrence of fires;
the maintenance of hand tools and devices, the defect of special technique, in addition to the preparation of the Operational Guard, and the professional first aid brigades.
So far this year in the province there have been more than 70 fires, which affected 804.4 hectares of surface, the specialist said, who highlighted two of large proportions in Alto de Ceiba, Yateras, and in Punta de Maisí.
Among the causes figure human negligence, mainly caused by poachers, irresponsible smokers, the burning of areas for different agricultural purposes and the circulation of vehicles without spark arresters.
