Guantanamo.- On the occasion of Mother’s Day, celebrated on the second Sunday of May, Alis Azahares Torreblanca, Governor of Guantánamo, sent a heartfelt message to the mothers of Guantánamo, who, day by day, alongside men, build and defend the work of the Revolution during these challenging times for the nation, motivated by the conviction that Cuba must be protected.
In her message, she highlights that besides their shared responsibility in raising their children, these women are present in cooperatives, shopping centers, scientific institutions, hospitals, and schools; in the defense of the nation, sports, culture, housing construction, social projects, and food production; offering solidarity, which is also an expression of love and a way of making history.
Dear Mothers,
May has arrived, and as tradition dictates, on the second Sunday we once again celebrate Mother’s Day—a moment to kiss the face marked by the years’ scars of the one who gave us life; to say, “Mom, you’re one of a kind;” or to place a bouquet or flower before the photograph of the one who is no longer with us but who, wherever she may be, watches over us—her children and grandchildren.
As José Martí said, “Mothers are love and not reason; they are inconsolable sorrow and exquisite sensitivity.”
Our beloved mothers and all women represent the most admirable achievement of the Cuban social project. Side by side with men, in the most diverse, complex, and important tasks, they build and defend, against any threat, the Cuba we love.
Beyond their role in raising and educating children, they are seen leading important scientific research, managing factories, defending the homeland, participating in sports and culture, building housing and social infrastructure, producing food, and fulfilling internationalist missions—offering solidarity, which is also making history.
There are countless reasons to express our deepest love for the mothers of Cuba, especially those from Guantánamo.
On behalf of the Provincial Government of People’s Power and all the people,
Happy Mother’s Day!
Alis Azahares Torreblanca
Governor of Guantánamo
