Guantánamo.- The epidemiological situation regarding arboviruses in Guantánamo province is complex due to the intense rains, high temperatures, and humidity, which favor the proliferation of the Aedes aegypti mosquito, among other vectors carriers of Zika, dengue, chikungunya, and oropouche.
The provincial director of Hygiene and Epidemiology, Ariadna Benech Jiménez, reported on the radio program “En Frecuencia con el Pueblo” this Saturday, November 8, an increase in dengue and chikungunya infections, highlighting their higher incidence in Guantánamo, Baracoa, and Caimanera, as well as the outbreak of oropouche in Yateras, Imías, and Maisí.
The high dengue transmission period coincides with the hurricane season annually. All four dengue virus are DENV-1, DENV-2 and DEV-3 are the main circulating serotypes among the Guantánamo population, particularly among infants.
In Guantánamo Province, multisectoral actions are currently being implemented, including adulticide treatments in high-risk areas, as well as home inspections and the destruction of breeding sites .
Although no deaths from arbovirus have been reported, there have been serious cases in children.
