Guantánamo.- Through pre-event courses, conferences, and roundtable discussions, the Provincial Scientific Conference on Pediatrics and Neonatology is being held in Guantánamo, in conjunction with the Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, and Residents program, to improve care for the child and adolescent segment.
One of the pre-event courses was dedicated to Dermatology, entitled “Protecting Your Skin from the Sun: A Personalized Approach from the Pediatric Age.” The course discussed exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays, which cause lesions, cancer, and actinic keratosis, a condition manifested by rough, scaly patches that develop after years of direct sunlight exposure.
In this regard, participants reflected on the need to protect the skin, especially that of children and adolescents, as well as ways to protect this organ that covers the entire human body.
A pre-event course on Cardiology was also offered, in which participants analyzed the characteristics and proper method of oscultation, both in healthy and sick patients, in order to detect cardiovascular conditions early and from the pediatric age.
The interactive roundtable discussion “History of Pediatrics in Guantánamo and its Current Challenges” also took place during the event. The discussion highlighted the contributions of the nursing staff, the evolution of critical care units from their inception to the present, and the development of neonatology and primary health care in the province.
Specially significant moments included the remembrance and tribute to professionals who are no longer physically present, as well as the meeting between generations of the past and present at the Pérez Agustín Pérez Pediatric Hospital in Guantánamo, with the participation of retired professors, founders, and prominent figures who contribute to the development of this specialty.
The Provincial Scientific Conference on Pediatrics and Neonatology, in conjunction with the Internal Medicine and Emergency Medicine Conference, will continue this Friday with activities such as pre-event courses on Antimicrobial Resistance, taught by the Pediatric Intensive Care Medicine faculty, and the Pediatric Heart Failure Conference at the Cardiocentro in Santiago de Cuba.
