Guantánamo.- Currently  Guantánamo presents a complex epidemiological situation, although to date no deaths from arbovirus have been reported, according to information confirmed by Dr. Leonel Heredia Carpintru, deputy director of the Provincial Center for Hygiene, Epidemiology, and Microbiology. He also urges the public to stay informed through the institution’s official channels or the local press.

The specialist explained to the provincial newspaper Venceremos that since the end of August, as is usual at this time of year, the data show a rise in mosquito borne infections that leads to an increase in febrile cases.

The recent heavy rains in eastern Cuba exacerbate the situation, favoring the creation of new transmission hotspots and increasing the risks associated with diseases such as dengue and chikungunya.

According to Dr. Heredia, the risk of transmission is present in the ten municipalities of the province, although the most affected are Guantánamo, Caimanera, Imías, and San Antonio del Sur. Currently, around 30 patients are hospitalized at the Dr. Agostinho Neto General Teaching Hospital, while 14 minors are in the Pedro Agustín Pérez Pediatric Institution.

Dr. Heredia also highlighted the multisectoral actions implemented in Guantánamo to combat this situation and urged the population to immediately consult a doctor if they have any discomfort or feverish symptoms, for early detection and proper management of the disease.
