Guantánamo – A total of five players and a coach from the province of Guantánamo are appearing on different Cuban soccer teams, demonstrating the years of work in the grassroots in the easternmost territory.
Two of the star players, Dairon de Jesús Delgado Cardosa and Rogelio García Leliebre, have been called up to the senior national team.
They are part of the Cuban team that will play two matches against Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and one against Grenada on October 5, 8, and 11.
Over the years, Guantánamo football owes much to the work of men like Agustín Megret, Fidel “Jiquí” Salazar, Roger Gómez, Dioscórides Moulín, Omar Vázquez, Reynaldo “Bombillo” Revé, and the contribution of Italian Lorenzo Mambrini with his creative play.
There, with the efforts of experienced teachers from the school and youth categories, Guantánamo is taken into account, and further proof of this is the inclusion of athlete Erik Luis La O Carnet and Coach Manuel Portuondo López in the Cuban team that will participate in the FIFA FORWAR 2025 U-16 Tournament, in Guatemala.
Sandro Savillano is the coach of this team, which arrives at the venue this Tuesday and will match the host country next Wednesday.
This is an official event that aims to promote soccer among children and young people.
Guantanamo residents are distinguished among Cuban soccer teams, as Yuridis Hodelín Ramírez and Yordan Urgellés Wilson, who also participate in the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup is the 24th edition of the FIFA U-20 World Cup that is being held in Chile from 27 September to 19 October 2025.
Guantánamo distinguished itself this year in the 108th Cuban Soccer League’s Opening Tournament by finishing runner-up behind Havana, proof that the most universal sport in this eastern territory is on the right track.
