At the national level, Guantanamo prevails as the one with the largest number of certified Danger, Vulnerability and Risk (PVR) studies, especially those related to earthquakes, that´s why it was granted the Cuban Academy of Sciences Award this year.

The prize recognizes the methodology by which specialists from the Center for Technological Applications for Sustainable Development and the territory’s Science, Technology and Environment Branch, conducted research in the municipalities of Caimanera and Guantanamo.

Such studies contribute to the preparation of appropriate plans for disaster reduction by the governments in each territory and the different sectors involved, as well as territorial planning and the design of socioeconomic development policies.

Guantanamo also stands out for the Study of Dangers, Vulnerabilities and Epizootic Risks, in which the diseases affecting animals were discussed, which can also have an impact on human life.

The province is also remarkable for carrying out investigations of this type in municipalities according to the incidence of phenomena such as coastal flooding caused by the sea intrusion and intense rainfalls, strong winds, rural fires, landslides and droughts.

The studies of Danger, Vulnerabilities and Risks provide a comprehensive vision to prevent and counteract, as far as possible, the factors that lead to disasters, in addition to offering tools to mitigate the effects of climate change that affect the economy and society.
