Guantanamo.- The “Entre Ríos” Science and Technology Park in Guantánamo will promote the sustainable use of the province’s rich biodiversity and implement an intellectual property and bioeconomy management model adapted to mountainous and coastal ecosystems.

Government officials, business leaders, and members of the local scientific community are working to establish a Science and Technology Park (STP)—a new type of commercial entity intended to drive economic and social development in Cuba’s easternmost and most mountainous province.

The project would place Guantánamo alongside Havana, Matanzas, Villa Clara, and Holguín, provinces that have already established their own science and technology parks. However, Guantánamo’s park would be unique in Cuba, focusing specifically on the sustainable use of its extensive forest biodiversity and non-timber forest resources.

Named “Entre Ríos,” or “Between Rivers,” the Guantánamo STP aims to promote the creation of technology-based enterprises, economic diversification, and production linkages that generate new services.

The park will operate under a self-financing model, allowing it to generate foreign-currency revenues through projects focused on exporting scientific and technological services, as well as high-value-added bioproducts.

“Entre Ríos” will implement an intellectual property and bioeconomy management model tailored to mountainous and coastal ecosystems. It will draw on the province’s vast forest reserve, which covers more than 350,000 hectares, and on the exceptional biodiversity that distinguishes Guantánamo from the rest of the country.

The province has 23 protected areas, including Alejandro de Humboldt National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the largest biodiversity reserve in the insular Caribbean.

This status highlights the importance of establishing a science and technology park capable of supporting the conservation and sustainable use of these natural assets, while contributing to regional development and improving the population’s quality of life.
