Guantánamo.- Guantánamo will host the fourth sustainable land management project, part of the Country Partnership Program CPP-OP-15, following the initial workshop in Havana, which concluded on June 14.
The objective is to apply the results of previous work, materialized in actions for the efficient use and conservation of agricultural land, water and forests, as well as the project aimed at economic incentives and livestock, at a landscape or large scale.
With a five-year duration, this new initiative will focus primarily on the Guantánamo Guaso Basin, as it includes the agricultural area located in the Guantánamo Valley, according to Alexander Fernández Velázquez, a specialist from the Environmental Subdelegation in the province.
The professor and assistant researcher also pointed out that Project 4, included in the OP 15 International Program, aims to advance sustainable land management, for which the province has been recognized nationally as a result of the outstanding work in the 11 conservation and improvement areas selected in Guantánamo.
In this regard, overall results include the adoption of technologies and best practices for the proper management and care of soils, water, and forests by the agricultural system in the province and by producers, as well as the relationships established within the communities.
Likewise, Master of Science Alexander Fernández believes that sustainable land management is a model for managing the areas where it is applied, taking into account the social conditions of producers and promoting economic incentives for them, which serves as a working guide for achieving better agricultural yields.
