Guantanamo.- In Guantánamo, the most important thing is to reverse in each health service, institution and municipality what did not go well, it is necessary to analyze each detail for a better quality of life for patients and families, said the Minister of Public Health, José Ángel Portal Miranda, after assessing the work of the sector in the province corresponding to 2024.
During meeting on the annual report, the Mother and Child Program was evaluated, which at the end of the year 2024 registered 4,236 live births and reduced the number of deaths by 21 for a rate of 7.3 and although the national purpose is not met, progress is shown, since 2022 the province has maintained the rate above 9 per thousand live births.
To strengthen health indicators, Guantánamo has 37 Basic Work Groups in primary care with specialists in Comprehensive General Medicine, certified in pediatrics, obstetrics and internal medicine. The program also includes 22 polyclinics and 591 family doctor and nurse offices with full staff coverage.
At the end of last year, the construction program in the sector shows progress with work in 115 of these buildings, 35 more than planned, given the damage caused by Hurricane Oscar in the eastern municipalities of the province.
Likewise, surgical activity was evaluated, which was affected by mostly objective problems, however, it is necessary to increase the number of qualified professionals with specific training to perform limited-access surgery, while on the other hand, the surgical waiting list in the three hospitals of the province remains.
