The Guantanamo boxer Yojander Fuentes Druyet (57 kg) and the Havana David Espinosa (67 kg), added the two silver medals to Cuba in the 2024 World Youth Boxing Championship, a tournament held in Budva, Montenegro.
Fuentes Druyet, captain of the young Cuban squad, lost in the final against the Uzbek Samandar Olimov, protagonists of a tight fight, with quality and technical cleanliness by both boxers. The result was 3×2, in favor of the representative of Uzbekistan.
In the 67-kilogram division, Espinosa competed for gold against Kazakh Torekhan Sabyrkhan, who dominated the man from the capital with strength and power, winning by a vote of 4-1 in his favor.
The other boxers that the Cuban team presented: Javier Alexander Rawlins (86 kg), from Guantanamo; Angel Sober (48 kg), from Havana and Yurisniel Abreu (75 kg), from Villa Clara, lost in the quarterfinals and shortly before that step were eliminated the Havana native Kevin Sanchez (54 kg), the Santiago de Cubanative Jorge Luis Mayeta (80 kg) and the Matanza native Yoelvis Leyan Tejera (63.5 kg).
These results leave a bittersweet taste in the Cuban sport’s flagship, which has not been enjoying the best of times in recent months, after winning only two medals at the Paris Olympic Games and now far from what happened two years ago at the Junior World Championships held in La Nucía, Spain, where they finished with two golds, one silver and three bronzes.
Cuba is the leader in the historical medal standings in these competitions with 79 champions, 25 runners-up and 31 bronze medalists.
