Guantanamo.- On occasion of the 96th birth anniversary of Vilma Espín Guillois, Heroine of the Sierra and the Plains and founder of the Federation of Cuban Women (FMC), members of this organization in Guantánamo Province, gathered in José Martí Park in the city of Guantánamo to denounce the hostile blockade imposed by the United States government on Cuba.

During the event, Yairis Fernández Castellanos, General Secretary of the FMC in Cuba’s easternmost province, read the organization’s declaration on behalf of the women of the territory, condemning the genocidal economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by the United States against Cuba.

Also present were women from Guantánamo: Yanet Téllez Castillo, head of the Neonatology Service at the Dr. Agostinho Neto General Teaching Hospital in Guantánamo, and Yaima Salas Ruiz, director of 14 de Junio Special School for Deaf and Blind Children. They denounced the negative impacts of the blockade on health and education, which have prevented the acquisition of technological equipment and specialized supplies for both institutions.

The First Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, Yoel Pérez García, and the Vice Governor of Guantánamo, Carlos Raúl Martínez Turro, presided over the meeting, which was attended by women from the education, culture, sports, and health sectors.
