The Public Health sector takes the necessary measures in the Guantanamo Province to preserve the lives of patients and material resources in the face of the current weather event and the probability of the development of a low-pressure system due to intense rains.

Juana Brooks, civil defense specialist in the general direction of that sector, emphasized the importance of taking care of patients and health personnel, while protecting the warehouses of the different institutions in the territory.

Likewise, transportation and food are guaranteed in hospitals, nursing homes and other care centers such as the Cristina Pérez provincial maternity home, which admits 54 pregnant women from all municipalities, except Maisí and Baracoa, who are cared by the local medical staff and service.

The specialist explained that hygienic-epidemiological surveillance is maintained for possible outbreaks of diarrhea, dengue or other diseases, and urged the population to preparing and storing a safe drinking water supply, (boiling water or using chlorination and iodine tablets) whenever possible, in addition to maintaining the cleanliness of patios, rooftops and community plots.

She also specified that surgical brigades are activated in vulnerable areas to provide an immediate response in cases that cannot be transferred to hospitals due to river flooding or other causes, measures in line with the disaster risk reduction plan in the health sector.
