The first joint venture of the Cuban Agroforestry System, BioCuba Cafe S.A., was established in the province of Santiago de Cuba for the production of certified organic coffee.
The new Cuban-Italian entity is based on an innovative concept that departs from conventional coffee production to promote good agricultural practices aimed at improving crop yields and the quality of the final product, as well as to boost community and regional economic development.
Michele Curto, president of the Agency for Cultural and Economic Exchange with Cuba, stressed that the company will guarantee the production of coffee for export and domestic consumption.
“For every kilogram of coffee that goes out, another has to be guaranteed for the Cubans. Every time we export coffee, we must see to it that there is enough for the Cubans,” he said.
On his end, Robeldi Nicot, president of the Agroforestry Business Group, the province of Santiago de Cuba was chosen because from there comes 40% of the national production, which makes it the country’s top producer.
Since 2020, BioCubaCafé has been active and introduced new technologies in the eastern provinces of Granma and Santiago de Cuba, which has earned its staff the International Organic Certification, deemed highly important to market Arabica and Robusta coffee without chemical components.
