Guantanamo. The harvesting of the first coffee beans in the communities served by the Vertientes, La Máquina, and Los Llanos Management Centers marks the beginning of the harvest season in the municipality of Maisí, the largest coffee-producing municipality in the province. However, production remains well below the levels achieved during the peak harvests of the early 1980s.
According to Leonides César Lores, the area’s harvest manager, this season will yield the first volumes of a campaign that is not expected to be substantial and will require efficient management.
To mitigate the impact that power outages have had on the wet processing of coffee cherries in previous seasons, generators will be made available at the pulping plants in Santa Marta, Cantillo, and Vertientes—three of the six processing plants operating in Maisí.
