The Maisí Maternity Home opened its doors at the end of July 2024, created precisely to commemorate July 26th of that year, and since then it has been a fundamental pillar in ensuring that every pregnancy has a happy ending.

Guantanamo.- The municipality of Maisí, the easternmost end in Cuba, celebrates hosting the activities for National Rebellion Day with a significant achievement in the health sector: maintaining a zero infant mortality rate this year.

This result is the fruit of the systematic work of the Mother and Child Health Program (PAMI) in the territory, according to the website of CMKS Radio Guantánamo.

In an interview with Dr. Eliannis Lores Cross, municipal advisor for the program in Maisí, she explained that the municipality is currently providing care to 115 pregnant women and 290 breastfeeding mothers. Among the pregnant women, 26 are adolescents, an indicator that has been prioritized by the local health system.

To prevent teenage pregnancies, a strategy has been implemented in family doctor’s offices that includes the insertion of subdermal implants and intrauterine devices (IUDs), as well as contraceptive pills. “Pregnant adolescents are not prepared; their organs are not ready for pregnancy,” warned the specialist.

The prevention effort involves various social actors: the family, the family doctor, the education system, and the PAMI itself, all coordinated to guarantee the care and protection of expectant mothers.

The local Maternity Home, with a capacity of 10 beds, is currently at full capacity.

The protocol establishes that all pregnant women must be admitted at 34 weeks, while adolescents must be admitted starting at 26 weeks, provided they do not present obstetric risks.

When a high obstetric risk is identified, pregnant women are admitted immediately, and once the diagnosis that prompted their admission has been resolved, they can be discharged if they have not yet reached the weeks established for scheduled admission.

The results of the Mother and Child Health Program were decisive in Maisí being chosen as the provincial host for National Rebellion Day, a recognition that reflects the territory’s commitment to maternal and child health.

Dr. Flores Cruz called on the community to maintain the joint effort to preserve these honorable results.
