Mangrove protection is among the priorities of the Baracoa Conservation Department of the Alejandro de Humboldt National Park (PNAH), given the importance of these ecosystems.
To this end, the PNAH’s experts are collecting seeds for planting in specific areas where they are needed, an activity that also involves both environmental unit workers and community members from the areas where these wetlands are located.
The environmentalists are conducting field work to update the status of the mangrove forest and the wildlife hosted, which serves as a starting point for establishing management plans.
The PNAH staff works in the Baracoa sector to protect and conserve mangroves not only for their environmental value, but also because mangroves play a critical role in protecting lives and property in low-lying coastal areas and communities from storm surges
