Guantánamo.- The Cuban Ministry of the Food Industry (MINAL) activated its 2025 Contingency Plan to protect food production and mitigate the effects of Hurricane Melissa in the eastern provinces.

According to official reports, MINAL first deputy minister Javier Francisco Aguiar also called for the preservation of human life, compliance with safety protocols, and adherence to the guidelines of the Civil Defense General Staff.

The plan includes the distribution of food supplies in mountain and hard-to-reach communities in Eastern Cuba, the worst hit by the hurricane.

In the case of the fisheries, vessels were moved to safe harbors, moorings were reinforced, fishing gear was dismantled, and decks and cabins were secured by ship captains and sailors, among other measures to cope with the storm surge.

MINAL checked the observance of the measures and the protection of resources in several entities and enterprises, whereas action plans were implemented in the provinces of Santiago de Cuba and Holguín to protect warehouses and other facilities
