Guantánamo.- The territorial delegation of the Ministry of Agriculture (MINAG) in the province of Guantánamo aims to significantly increase rice planting, thus contributing to the food self-sufficiency program. This campaign to plant more than 300 hectares of rice field, takes advantage of the weather conditions and available water resources.

However, the crop harvest faces certain challenges. The area in Caimanera municipality which covers approximately 20 hectares, benefits from recent rainfall, but the Las Jabillas settlement’s area, where more than 160 hectares will be cultivated, lacks sufficient water.

The detailed assessments to determine the viability of the crop based on water resources is necessary. Growing rice requires large amounts of water, which complicates its planting in areas with limited water resources.

On the other hand, in Paraguay town, conditions are already favorable for planting more than 100 hectares, thanks to the accumulation of water from the Guaso River. Another 200 hectares are currently being prepared, with the goal of incorporating them into the crop in December. The efficient use of water resources is key to maximizing rice production in the region.
