Workers from the Provincial Aqueduct and Sewer Enterprise undertake the installation of six new high-power turbines, made in Spain, of which three are installed at the Bano Arriba station and the same number at the La Clotilde dam, designed to pump 175 and 150 liters of water per second, respectively, and consume low levels of energy.
Lexis Suárez Ramírez, director of the aforementioned entity, highlighted that more than 140 thousand people will benefit from the instalation of these equipment that will significantly improve the water supply to high areas of the provincial capital, including the neighborhoods of the West, the circuit L and the Doctor Agostinho Neto General Teaching Hospital.
The University of Medical Sciences, the Rafael Freyre Sports Initiation School, the José Maceo Grajales Educational Complex, several Children’s day care centers and primary education centers will also be favored.
The manager pointed out that the modern devices will replace old high-current-consuming electric pumps and therefore the Basic Electrical Organization (OBE) will assign bonuses to Aqueducts and Sewage, instead of recurring penalties for enormous fluid expenses.
He reported that the three new electric pumps in the La Clotilde dam will benefit 10 thousand people who residing in Jamaica, the capital town of the Manuel Tames municipality, and the residents of the Obrero neighborhood who receive the fresh water from the network that supplies the Industrial Zone in the northeast of the city.
Despite the current economic limitations, the investment plan for 2024 foresees the replacement of 31 old electric pumps with automated, more efficient hybrid equipment connected to solar panels to make the stations independent of the National Electric System.
With the installation of the brand new equipment to the water supply scheme of the Guantanamo Aqueduct, which supplies seven out of every 10 city residents, the city’s ability to face the increasingly longer and more frequent dry periods in the sixth most populated city in Cuba is strengthened.
