The Provincial Government in Guantáanamo and the Local Government Council in Baracoa are working on a new local project for the endogenous and sustainable development of Maguana Beach, one of the most beautiful places in the Guantanamo geography.

The purpose responds to the territorial reorganization program of the municipality and resumes the concepts of a previous one called “Campus Maguana” designed for the use of the natural resources of the region in the services provision to tourists and the people in general.

The program seeks to work on the beach care and the rehabilitation of the facilities allowing, in coordination with different economic players, in order to provide different offers of Baracoa typical dishes.

Jesús Martín, territorial delegate of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (CITMA), said that the actions to be developed take into consideration the fishing regulation, the care of the beach, its dune and the environment, as revealed in the meeting to define the development of Maguana, chaired by the provincial Governor Alis Azahares Torreblanca.

Another work is being done in the incorporation of young people from the near communities into different forms of employment, the organization of self-employed vendors, the increase in accommodation capacities and the promotion of community tourism in the spa surrounded by palm trees and coconut trees, and characterized through white sands and crystal clear waters.

Located 12 miles from the city of Baracoa, the beach takes its name from the Taíno Indian Maguana, which in its Aboriginal name means “the first stone.”
