Guantanamo.- As part of a national campaign by the Ministry of Public Health, vaccination against the nine-year-old girlsHPV) is progressing satisfactorily in the coastal municipality of Caimanera, in Guantanamo Province.
The vaccine is being administered to approximately 60 nine-year-old girls, a priority population before the onset of sexual activity, to protect them from cervical cancer, 95 percent of which is caused by this virus.
Casilda Cervera García, head of the vaccination program in that region, explained that the vaccine is transported to the settlements under the appropriate cold chain.
She warned that the use of immunoglobulins or blood products should be avoided in the three months prior to vaccination, and that adverse reactions may include pain, redness, or swelling at the injection site.
Fever, headache, and fatigue may also occur within the first 24 hours. Therefore, it is essential—and this is well known to the primary care teams at community clinics—to monitor for symptoms 24 hours, 72 hours, seven days, and 15 days after immunization.
The Cecolin vaccine, approved in 2024 by the World Health Organization and its Pan American Health Organization counterpart, use in a 0.5mL single-dose schedule by intramuscular injection.
