The occurrence of 61 work accidents in Guantanamo during the first semester of the current year demonstrates the need to raise prevention, the key to reduce this indicator that causes damage to human life, the economy and has a negative impact on the family and society.
Jorge Castañeda Oquendo, an official in Labor Affairs in the provincial Cuban Workers Federation (CTC, in Spanish) explains that due to these accidents at this stage of the year, two workers of the companies Constructora Integral and Materias Primas, respectively, were killed and 64 people were injured.
For this reason, he urges administrations to adequately execute the budget allocated for the improvement of working conditions to tackle the risks and the purchase of means of protection for workers.
Although with greater incidence in Guantanamo and Baracoa, in the rest of the municipalities it is also of interest to promote respect for security measures in the work centers, which are endorsed in chapter eight of the Labor Code.
The previous year the province recorded 145 occupational accidents with more than a hundred injured and three dead, about 113 thousand 600 pesos was paid as a subsidy and the amount of lost work hours exceeded five thousand 800.
