The hard-to-reach community Los Calderos, in the municipality of Imías, will host Saturday the Guantanamo Provincial Rally to mark the 28th anniversary of the Turquino Plan Pprogram that was implemented for the comprehensive and sustainable mountain development and better quality of life of its inhabitants.

This town, declared as reference area in the province, likewise Monte Verde, in Yateras and Hatibonico, in Caimanera, excells for its socio-economic progress, low infant mortality rate and reduction of crime and illegality.
Other requirements met by families, residents and working groups in that place are related to sports and recreation activities, refurbishment of facilities, timely distribution of basic goods and services to everyone even in hard-to reach- areas.
This year a total of 19 settlements, where the 3.9% of Guantanamo population live, will be declared as reference, with the aim of promoting the permanence of residents in rural region.
Of the ten municipalities of the easternmost province of Cuba, nine are integrated by their geographic features to the Plan Turquino Project; meanwhile Yateras, Baracoa, Maisi, Imías and San Antonio del Sur are totally covered by mountains.
The Plan Turquino Project was set up by the Council of State of Cuba on June 2, 1987, aimed at encouraging the development of hard-to-reach mountainous areas that promotes the values of nature and heritage protection of flora and fauna.
