The program, funded by the European Union, aims to improve warning system for quakes, and will be deployed in these three cities.
The workshop, sponsored by the General Staff of the Civil Defense, is attended by specialists from the National Seismological Research Center (CENAIS), the Red Cross and the Oriente University, as well as nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) such as Handicap International, CARE and Oxman.
Guadalupe Gonzalez, Cuban counterpart of the NGO CARE, explained that the project has four lines of work, adjusted early seismic warning system, led by the Civil Defense.
Implementing Prepared and Alerted Cities will last 18 months and includes installation of five new seismic monitoring stations in these regions of Cuba.
Enrique Arango, deputy director of CENAIS in Santiago de Cuba, said the devices will cover areas that still need to be monitored in the most active earthquake region in the country, and improve the system precision and location of quakes.
