Guantanamo Improves Attention to the Infertile Couple

From the year 2017 to 2018 in Guantanamo, births decreased by more than one thousand, which is why this year the actions for the attention to the Infertile Couple are promoted as part of a program aimed at increasing fertility and birth rate, according to reports of the Provincial Health Directorate.

As example is the polyclinic Martyrs of August 4 of the provincial capital, where 319 couples were attended to date, of them 11 achieved pregnancy from primary care, 15 after hospital care, while another 19 in the regional institution located in the province of Holguín designed to serve patients from eastern Cuba.

Dr. Yarelis Tejeda Delgado, coordinator of the infertility program in that area of ​​health, explained that despite the limitations for performing some studies, treatments, they prioritize the couples who after a year of frequent and unprotected sexual relations do not achieve desired conception.

The procedures includes the follicular monitoring to verify the ovulation of women and the exact moment in which it occurs, this method is also combined with the stimulation of ovulation and if it is not, in correspondence with the cycle, the couples attend the Provincial Consultation of Assisted Reproduction or secondary level located in the General Teaching Hospital Doctor Agostinho Neto.

Similarly, some patients are referred to Holguín, to one of the four regional centers in the country where other more complex methods such as artificial insemination and in vitro fertilization are applied, both alternatives for fertilization.

In the consultations for the attention to the Infertile Couple disseminated in the ten municipalities of Guantanamo, the risk factors that affect reproduction are identified; in addition to the specialists provide health education in order to eradicate alcoholism and smoking, among other inappropriate life styles for those who want to have children.
