Simone Biles to compete on all four events at Olympic team finals despite calf injury

The American gymnastics star is in the lineup for all four events during Tuesday night’s Olympic team finals.

Biles tweaked her left calf while warming up for floor exercise during qualifying on Sunday. She retreated briefly to have the calf taped but then returned and posted the top scores on floor and vault on her way to topping the all-around.

Last week, U.S. team leaders had considered holding Biles out of the uneven bars in team finals to give her a small break during the Games. Instead, Biles will be part of every event during the finals, when three gymnasts compete and all three scores count. Her husband, Jonathan Owens, is expected to be there.

The Americans are heavily favored to win gold after finishing runner-up to Russia in Tokyo three years ago.

Biles will go last for the U.S. on three events — vault, floor exercise and balance beam — and will be up second on uneven bars. (Source AP)

Olympics: Poor Water Quality Leads to Cancellation of Swimming Training

Sixteen surfers bowed out of the competition following round 2 but the surfers from Brazil, Japan and France have all emerged victorious in their respective heat.

Among them is Tokyo Olympic silver medalist Kanoa Igarashi of Japan, who improved from a dismal round 1 show to beat Italy’s Leonardo Fioravanti.

“I woke up today and saw that I had one of the toughest draws of the whole contest. It got my heart racing. I thought ‘I definitely don’t want to lose out here in the second round of the Olympics’,” Igarashi said.

Brazil, Japan and France have joined the United States, who had a strong start throughout the first day of the competition, to keep all the surfers in the event ahead of the round of 16.

Another breakthrough was made for Chinese surfing on Sunday as 15-year-old Yang Siqi won her heat to reach the last 16. But she would have a daunting task in the next round against Caroline Marks, a major gold medal contender with the highest score of 17.93 points in round 1. But Yang has already won admiration with her brave performance, including from Igarashi.

“She’s been so inspirational for me. She was charging so hard in the free surfs. I feel like, as Asians in surfing, there are not many of us, so whenever we can support each other, we support each other as much as possible. She’s definitely one that I would love to keep cheering for the rest of her career,” Igarashi said. (Source TeleSur- English)

Puerto Rico women’s basketball team still without an Olympic victory

The Puerto Rican women’s basketball team continued today without tasting a victory at the Olympic Games, losing 55-58 to Serbia in Group A of the Paris 2024 Games.

The European team won the first three quarters by 23-15, 20-11 and 12-10 and lost in the fourth with a score of 3-19.

Trinity San Antonio led the Caribbean attack with 11 points and four rebounds, and received support from Mya Hollingshed, who scored eight points and six rebounds under the hoops, and Pamela Rosado, who scored eight points and made five shots near the backboards.

For the Balkans, Dragana Stankovic scored 15 points and made 10 shots in the basket, seconded by Jovana Nogic (14-4) and Sasa Cadjo (10-4).  (Source Cuba Sí)

La Cruz’s setback surprises in the Paris 2024 boxing event

The second day of the boxing tournament of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games was marked today by an unexpected setback for Cuban Julio Cesar La Cruz (92 kg), double world champion and five-time world champion.

The success went 3-2 to Cuban Loremberto Alfonso, who represents Azerbaijan and arrived here with bronze medals in Tokyo 2020 and a gold and a silver medals in the world championships.

Julio came out ahead 4-1, and although in the intermediate act the officials’ decision was 3-2 in favor of his opponent, he kept an overall advantage of 2-1, given the prevailing equality in the other pair of ballots.

The closing was not enough to avoid another 3-2 for Loremberto and the outcome caused La Cruz unexpected elimination, followed by conflicting opinions on the evaluators’ decision and numerous messages of support.

Among the first, that of Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, from his X account.

“Get up, champion! In sport as in life you win and you lose. Much glory you have given to #Cuba: 2 Olympic and 5 world titles. Get well soon and continue to support your teammates and the rest of the delegation. A hug, captain!”, he wrote. (Source Cuba Sí)

Cuban beach volleyball duo successfully debuts in Paris 2024

Cuban beach volleyball duo Noslen Diaz and Jorge Luis Alayo debuted with a victory at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The Cuban team overcame the strong American duo of Partain and Benesh two sets to zero.

With the imposing presence of the iconic Eiffel Tower a few meters from the facility that hosts this discipline in the summer fair, the Cubans were not daunted by the quality of their rivals and took a resounding victory in the beginning of the D key.

Diaz and Alayo rescued an epic first set, after a feline reaction, which led them to a string of seven straight points when they were losing 16-12 to finally win 21-18.

After such a reaction in the second set, they had no major problems to seal the success, as they kept the lead all the time to win with an identical 21-18.

The Cubans in their qualifying route achieved more than one victory against top couples of the world ranking, and although this tournament has a complicated road ahead, no one should be surprised that they can give themselves a historic result in the City of Light. (Source Cuba Sí)
