The challenges and opportunities that the country faces in the context of further elections in order to strengthen the democratic system and guarantee transparency and efficiency in its processes, were analyzed by the members of the Provincial Electoral Council in Guantanamo.

The meeting where the performance during the past year was reviewed was chaired by Tomás Amarán Díaz, vice president of the National Electoral system (CEN) and Yoel Pérez García, first secretary of the Communist Party in Guantanamo, Governor Alis Azahares and Oceanía Orihuela Bignotte, president of the Electoral Council in the province.

There was a consensus among participants on the need to consolidate the identification, selection and training of electoral authorities at all levels, the link with the base, the accompaniment of the electoral body at different levels, as well as the work with young people.

When speaking at the event, Amarán Díaz reflected on the importance of increasing knowledge of the Cuban Electoral System and its dissemination, as well as strengthening electoral structures to guarantee the quality of the different processes.

The Provincial Electoral Council’s function is to organize, direct and ensure electoral processes, popular consultations when appropriate, referendums and plebiscites that are called, being the highest electoral authority in its territory, and is only accountable to the National Electoral Council.
