Cuban writer Eduardo Heras LeónOn his Twitter account, the Cuban President Miguel Díaz Canel sent an embrace and heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and disciples of the Cuban writer Eduardo Heras León, also known as ‘El Chino Heras’, the professor of so many others.

The journalist, editor and critic died early in the morning in Havana at the age of 82 after a prolific career in the world of literature.

According to the Cuban Book Institute, details of the tribute to be paid to him by writers and artists in the institutions attached to the Ministry of Culture of Cuba will be announced throughout the day.

Heras Leon developed an outstanding career as a ballet critic and later became one of the most important narrative voices of his generation.

He graduated in Journalism from the University of Havana, and was part of the team of professionals who founded the Letras Cubanas Publishing House, where he headed the Narrative section and served as deputy director of Literature at the Cuban Book Institute.

Among the responsibilities that he assumed throughout his career, he was the director of the Editorial Fund of Casa de las Americas, which he combined with his rich literary production, which includes titles such as Los pasos en la hierba, Acero, A hierro limpio, Cuestion de principios and Cuentos completos.

For more than 20 years he directed the Onelio Jorge Cardoso Literary Training Center.

He was awarded with the Distinction for National Culture, the Felix Elmuza Order, the Alejo Carpentier Medal, the “Replica del Machete of Generalisimo Maximo Gomez”, the Maestro de Juventudes Award, the National Publishing (2001) and Literature (2014) Awards and other acknowledgements.
