Guantánamo – In the Joa Community in Transformation, in the city of Baracoa, in Guantánamo Province, the “Rolando Gómez Viera” Elementary School is carrying out a significant educational activity that highlights the importance of the cultural heritage of Cuba’s First City.
During school hours, the pioneers and teachers of the 5th grade of the school participate in the “Route of the Heritage Elements of Fort Matachín,” an experience that allowed them to connect with local history and discover the roots that shape their identity.
The tour through the old fortress from Cuba’s colonial period was an opportunity not only to learn about the historical value of Fort Matachín, but also to foster in the students a sense of pride and belonging to their land.
Fort Matachín was the second fortification built on Punta de Esteban, between 1739 and 1742, which was integrated into the defensive system of the Landscape City of Cuba, due to the siege of privateers and pirates, in addition to the rivalries between Spain and England, which affected the city in one way or another.
