The Pozo-Azul dam, the result of the development program decided by Commander in Chief Fidel Castro for the Caujerí Valley, stores 5.7 million m³, a volume that will guarantee water supply for the cold sowing campaign, the most important of the two carried out in Cuba, both for the variety of crops, and for the volumes of harvest it provides, mostly vegetables.

The dammed liquid represents less than 50 percent of the capacity of the dam (14.8 million m³), however it will also guarantee supply to the population and the agricultural emporium industry processing tomatoes and other products.

The availability of water in Pozo-Azul has enormous significance, especially for the development of the tomato planting campaign in the Caujerí Valley, by far the vegetable that is mostly cultivated.

As a consequence of the long drought that affects the province, the aforementioned dam drastically decreased until a few months ago the amount of water accumulated, to the extent that agricultural irrigation had to be stopped, with the consequent impact on the crops in the province´s main productive center.

In the restoration of the dam, a decisive role is played by the water provided by the Sabanalamar-Pozo Azul transfer, a hydraulic work that had also collapsed due to the almost total descent of the Sabanalamar river bed, where the intake work for the transfer of the liquid by gravity to the reservoir.

According to the information offered by Onelio Rodríguez Marzo, director of a second water supply center, the mechanized maintenance of the facility, carried out last March, and the cleaning that, has also contributed to improving the contribution of transferred water.
